Lorne H. Saltman
Lorne started his career as a tax lawyer when he was with the Tax Policy Branch, Department of Finance, Ottawa. He then practised tax law with another large Toronto law firm before joining Cassels Brock, where he is a partner in the Tax & Trusts Group.
Lorne has been an instructor in the Taxation Section of the Bar Admission Course for the Law Society of Upper Canada. He is a past member of the Executive of the Taxation Committee of the International Bar Association. He is the Canadian contributor to the book “International Taxation of Electronic Commerce”, published by Kluwer Law International.
Lorne has advised clients on, and frequently spoken and published papers on, diverse tax matters, including corporate tax planning, corporate mergers and acquisitions, income trusts, captive insurance companies and real estate taxation for the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, the International Bar Association and other continuing education institutions.
Lorne’s recent work experience includes the following:
- Principal tax law advisor to Goldcorp Inc. on its $1.6 billion acquisition of Placer Dome assets from Barrick Gold Corporation and on Goldcorp's $21 billion acquisition of Glamis Gold Ltd.
- Principal tax advisor on the conversion of Dominion Citrus Limited, a public company, into Dominion Citrus Income Fund, an income trust
- Principal tax advisor to Amtelecom Income Fund on its conversion from a public company to an income trust and on its subsequent acquisitions
- Principal tax advisor to HudBay Minerals Inc. on the financing and acquisition of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited
- Principal tax advisor to The Heico Companies, LLC with respect to the purchase of the assets of the Ivaco companies
