L. Michael Shannon

Michael focuses on acting for catastrophically injured victims of other's negligent conduct, such as a result of motor vehicle accidents, product malfunctions, medical malpractice and occupiers’ liability. Michael handles cases all over North America. Currently he is acting for plaintiffs who have been injured in a number of provinces in Canada and states in the United States.

He has been responsible in recovering over $100 million for injured people, and is recognized by Lexpert as one of the leading practitioners in personal injury law in Ontario. He has been named to the Best Lawyers in Canada. A few of Michael’s recent notable cases include:

  • Representing a client who was rendered quadriplegic after he was crushed under 16 hundred pounds of tabletops. The case settled for many millions of dollars.
  • Resolving a case for millions of dollars in which a teenager was severely brain damaged and will be in a “sleeping coma” forever.
  • Acting successfully and resolving one of the largest personal injury settlements in Canadian history.

As the firm’s former Managing Partner and Deputy Managing Partner and member of the Firm’s Executive Committee, Michael is always in touch with the business realities. “At Cassels Brock, independence is valued and supported. Michael is the Chair of the Canadian Paraplegic Association Ontario Annual Wheelchair Race, and sits on the Board of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association. He is also an active member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Toronto Lawyers Association, and the Canadian Bar Association-Ontario. He has written and lectured extensively on personal injury matters all over Canada.
