Our Students' Real Experience

Here are some examples of files that our articling students worked on as summer students.

  • Chad Aboud
Last summer I worked on the auto industry restructuring file, which was pretty cool because I was able to be present for strategy conference calls with Federal Government agencies. I was also relied on to provide initial analysis on various versions of restructuring documents to interpret their potential effect on the Canadian economy.
  • Geoff Breen
I worked on a file that involved the reorganization of a large film studio. I was asked to attend a meeting of the directors at the studio. Having an interest in the entertainment industry, it was exciting to be privy to discussions concerning the operation of a business in the film industry.
  • Justin Dela Pena
I had an opportunity to research the various corporate structures and by-laws of professional sports organizations.
  • Rebecca Hamovitch
I helped create the first-ever franchise law course in Canada for the University of Western Ontario's Faculty of Law. It was fun to attend one of the lectures and see the final product in action. I didn’t give much thought to the law governing franchises before joining the firm and now it is one of my areas of interest!

  • Rishi Hargovan
Last summer I had the chance to spend a week working for the in-house counsel for a financial company. I not only learned a lot about the credit card industry, I got a chance to see how Cassels Brock lawyers work with clients and build strong relationships."

  • Joanne Lindenberg
One of my very first assignments last summer was to write a factum for a case concerning international parties. I had the opportunity to spend the day with our client, who had flown in from Europe. I was able to really engage with the case and saw my work put to actual use at the motion hearing.

  • Sandra Maio
One of the most interesting files I worked on last summer was my summer project with Ted Frankel. I was assigned to assist Ted with a file in which our client was suing another party for losses related to investment fraud. Ted brought me along to motions and examinations for discovery where I was responsible for taking notes and then summarizing them afterward.

  • Colin Pendrith
Researching and assisting in the preparation of facta for an application for judicial review to the Federal Court of Appeal."

  • Andrea Rigobon
Attending trial at the Superior Court of Justice. Having the privilege of watching two senior litigators conduct a full cross-examination of the defendant’s witness. The rule in Browne v. Dunn made an appearance outside my evidence textbook!

  • Jennifer Sorge
Working on a large M&A transaction team was a great experience. I was able to see the transaction progress and understand where my work fit into the larger picture. Because the project extended over several months, I was able to form a bond with the associates and partners on the file and, as a result, many of the lawyers became informal mentors. Being able to go to the client's office in Montreal also added a unique perspective to the work.

  • Samantha Wu
Watching highly experienced litigators demonstrate their advocacy skills at a trial was a highlight of my summer.
